Authorities in the central province of Khanh Hoa, home to Nha Trang, have slapped fines of VND10 million ($430) against two hotels each for deliberately inflating their star ratings.
Areca Hotel, which has not yet been rated, and three-star B&N Hotel in Nha Trang, a popular beach resort town, had claimed to be ‘four-star’ accommodation facilities without official recognition from local authorities.
They were also forced to remove the 4-star listing on the world’s leading booking site Agoda.
Vo Quang Hoang, chairman of the Khanh Hoa Hotel Association, said Khanh Hoa currently has more than 1,100 hotels. Of these, there are over 100 three-to-five-star hotels with about 20,000 rooms.
According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the star awarding and star renewal for hotels is done every three-five years.
However, some hotels with a lower level of service have deliberately inflated their star ratings to raise room rates.
